Mitsubishi Lancer GTS
We recorded a 0-60-mph sprint of 7.7 seconds, a healthy 1.1 seconds
quicker than the less powerful 2008 model. The GTS's acceleration now
compares favorably with that of similarly powered competitors like the
Mazda 3 s Sport and Subaru Impreza 2.5i. Fuel economy, however, is
underwhelming at an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city/28 highway and 23 mpg in
mixed driving. Our test car managed slightly more than 21 mpg in our
enthusiastic hands.

Performance
The pistol-grip shifter, conveniently canted toward the driver,
recalls the good old days — except now, instead of plastic that vaguely
resembles wood, it's covered in leather. Working the shifter and clutch
requires surprisingly little effort, and the action of both is refined.
A few staffers even felt this team was too polished, saying that
changing gears in a retro-styled muscle car should require a bit more
flexion from the driver's biceps, à la Ford's Mustang Bullitt. But most
of us had no complaints.

Honda Fit Base
The Fit is not the only small hatchback on the market. The Nissan
Versa and Toyota Yaris are both capable small cars with better than
average fuel economy, but neither of them is designed with the
imagination of the Fit. The Nissan does have a few features not found
in the Honda (such as a 6th gear on the manual transmission) and a
generally roomier feel. At $12,450 for the base automatic Yaris, the
Toyota is substantially less expensive than the Fit but feels cheaper
and provides little in the way of driving pleasure. The Smart Fortwo
Passion, which starts at $13,590, delivers better gas mileage but has a
balky automatic transmission, runs on premium gas and only seats two.
Still, what sets the Fit apart is Honda's creative use of interior
space and delivering a fuel-efficient car that's actually a lot of fun
to drive.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Function
The ample E-Class trunk is capable of swallowing a large suitcase,
plus at least two golf bags. The wide opening allows those bags to drop
in without any fuss, while the free-moving hinges make opening and
closing the trunk very easy. In fact, the lid opens itself completely
at the push of the key fob's trunk button.
